About the Artist:

Janet Campbell has always had a love of art and nature. Her initial art education was in the Botanical Illustration Program at the Bronx Botanical Garden.   In the 1990s she fell in love with watercolor.  She has had many inspiring teachers and among them found Mel Stabin most helpful in her evolution.  Her paintings reflect a transparent and loose style.  Early watercolor experiences and plein air painting classes focused her on landscape painting.     Living on the Shawangunk Ridge and close to the Bashakill Wetlands in Sullivan County NY offers her rich subject material.  Along the way she expanded into figure work and the painting of shelter animals.  She developed a passion for color pouring with watercolors. Most recently she has been focused on plein air painting.

Janet has taught workshops and classes in watercolor at the Wallkill River School of Art in Montgomery, NY.  She was co-teacher of an annual Painting By the Sea workshop on Long Beach Island, NJ for six years.  She has participated  in plein air festivals in the Hudson Valley and in Sarasota, Florida for several years.

Janet has exhibited in several “Kindred Spirits” shows with Pat Morgan in the mid-Hudson area and in Ridgewood, NJ.  She has had solo shows hosted by Newburgh City Hall and Vino 100 in Newburgh, NY and the Berkshire Bank in Bloomingburg, NY.  She is a Signature Member of the North East Watercolor Society,  an Associate  Member of the American Watercolor Society, and member of the Middletown Art Group, the Wurtsboro Art Alliance, and LightChasers Plein Air Painters of the Suncoast.  Her work is represented by the Wallkill River School and Gallery in Montgomery, NY.

Artist's Statement:

Since being absorbed when very young by the translucency of my mother's colorful bingo chips, the lights bright with color on the Christmas tree, and the stained glass church windows on Sundays, I have had a love affair with color pierced by light.

I paint from the heart striving to keep the connection with the subject that inspired me from the getgo.  Although for me it is the process of painting that fills my soul's desire, it pleases me when I find  I have left the water in watercolor at the completion of the project
